What is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump is a kind of pump which is used to remove water that has accumulated in a water-collecting sump basin, commonly found in the basements of homes.

The water may enter via the perimeter drains of a basement waterproofing system, funneling into the basin or because of rain or natural ground water, if the basement is below the water table level.

Sump pumps are used to prevent basement flooding. It also solves the problem of dampness where the water table is high from the foundation of a home.

So what this pump does is that it basically clears any water log that may come from flooding of storm drains and dry wells.

Why Do You Need It?

Sump Pumps are used to prevent hazardous water damage. The following is a list of hazardous problems that you can solve by using a sump pump:

Sump Pump Category

You can find plenty of different types of Sump Pumps on the market. Each has unique functionality with different features but all serve the same purpose.

sump pump category

Following are some of the major types of sump pump:

Primary Sump Pumps

Your run of the mill sump pump. These are the standard sump pumps many households use. These will help you with the standard draining of seepage or leaks.

A standard Sump Pump will prevent flooding in your house with the capability to pump thousands of gallons of water an hour.

There are two main types of primary sump pump. With Submersible pumps being one and Pedestal Pumps being the other one.

Submersible pumps are put underwater in your sump basin, while pedestal pumps are positioned with the pump motor out of the water, above your sump basin.

Battery Backup Sump Pumps

Battery backup pumps will provide you added insurance in the case of power cut. Sump pumps can be rendered useless in a power outage as they are electric-powered. Your home will be in the risk of flooding without them.

Combination Sump Pumps

Combination sump pumps are the combination of a primary pump with a battery backup, all in one package. With this type of sump pump, you are protected under normal circumstances as well as in power outages.

It will even kick on in the event the primary pump cannot keep up with the water as it enters the basin.

If you’ve ever dealt with the aftermath of a flooded basement, you know exactly what we are we talking.

Sewage Pumps

Sewage pumps aren’t like traditional sump pumps, but they can be used for the same purpose. They are mainly designed to pump sewage waste and effluent from a home to a septic system.

The biggest differences between a Sewage pump and a conventional pump is that Sewage pumps can pass solids up to 2″.

Sewage pumps run automatically after installation. They can either be installed in the septic tank itself, or in a separate pump chamber.

Among all these types, we will discuss the Submersible sump pump. This primary pump is a must-have home appliance if you have a wet basement in your house.

What Type of Sump Pump Do You Need?

what type of sump pump do you need

Primary Sump Pump is the necessary home appliance. And we would recommend a Submersible sump pump as your primary pump for your home. And you will need a 1/3 HP sump pump.

Most average sized homes situated in an average water table will require a 1/3 HP sump pump.

It is the most common pump size and will easily handle most applications. If you feel 1/3 HP is not enough power for your needs, you could use a 1/2 HP sump pump.

And there shouldn’t be any problem on that.

Essentially, the size of the sump pit in your basement will determine which pump you should select.

Submersible pumps are placed below water, so you’ll need a bigger pit than a pedestal pump.

Benefit for Submersible Sump Pump

A pump operating underwater has some excellent benefits. As the pump motor and impeller are underwater, the noise level is reduced by the water.

The water also helps to cool the motor, which is especially important during extended periods of use.

The last thing you will ever want is your pump overheating and breaking down in the middle of a torrential downpour. It is what leads to flooded basements.

We’ve compiled top 11 lists of best-selling, top-rated and expert recommended 1/3 HP Submersible primary sump pumps. Let’s have a look at them.
