Analysis of the Google Pixel 2 Phone Specs:

Design & Display

Like the original Pixel phone, Google has made its new phone with the glass/metal combination. Its attractive finish feels great in hand & looks good. The fingerprint scanner has moved down out of the glass block and onto the main metal body of the Pixel 2.

The Pixel 2 has a squeezable frame on its side like on the HTC U11. It can trigger the Google Assistant & give you access to the voice-enabled AI. According to TechRadar, the squeeze motion itself feels natural without any accidental triggering of the Assistant.

The power/lock and volume keys are situated on the right side which falls nicely under thumb and finger. You can charge the handset via a USB-C port on the base of the phone. However, there is no headphone jack. So you have to use your wired headphones with an adapter/dongle through the USB-C port.

Google’s decision to stick with large bezels above and below the display on the front is a bit of shame. It stops the phone being futuristic & eye-catching like the Samsung Galaxy S8, LG V30 or iPhone X.

Pixel 2 has a 5.0″ AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors. It has a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels with 16:9 ratio (~441 ppi density).

Pixel 2 XL has a 6.0″ P-OLED capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors. It has a resolution of 1440 x 2880 pixels with 18:9 ratio (~538 ppi density). It also has a ~76.4% screen-to-body ratio.

Both the phone display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

OS, Processor & Storage

Google Pixel 2 & Pixel 2 XL is powered by Android 8.0 Oreo. The operating system is 2x faster than its predecessor. Now you can get started on your favorite tasks more quickly with 2x the boot speed. Android Oreo will now allow you to see two apps at once. It can minimize background activity in the apps you use least. According to AndroidAuthority, the original Pixel & Pixel XL can now have an official update to Android 8.0 as well as other Android smartphones.

Both the phone provides the same amount of power with their Snapdragon 835 chipset, Octa-core processor, 4 GB RAM & 64/128 GB storage. There is no external card slot. Both have an Adreno 540 GPU.

Camera

Both the phone has 12.2 MP primary/rear cameras with f/1.8 aperture. They also have phase detection, laser autofocus, and dual-LED flash. The phone boasts of its portrait mode rival to the iPhone 8 Plus. To know more about the most impressive features of iPhone 8 & iPhone 8 Plus, read our article on Apple iPhone 8 specification.

Instead of using two cameras on the back, the Pixel 2 manages the blurry background effect with just a single sensor. Portrait mode also works on the front-facing 8 MP camera. Primary cameras are capable of recording 4K video. Front cameras can film 1080p videos.

According to Google, the Pixel 2 performs very well in low light which means a higher resolution photo at night. The new Google Pixel phone also packed with geo-tagging, face detection, touch focus, HDR, and panorama.

Google Pixel Buds

Google Pixel Buds

Like iPhone, Google ditched the 3.5mm audio port on the new Pixel phone. Now Google is making wireless headphones that are specifically designed for the Google phones. They are called Google Pixel Buds & work just like AirPods for the iPhones.

The new Pixel Buds are much similar to Apple’s AirPods. They are filled with many options like use of touch control, has a little battery case for power, and have a tight integration with the Google assistant.

Pixel Buds are not truly wireless earbuds; they are more like neckbuds. It is a wireless headphone with a cloth cord connecting the left and right side. There is a little cloth-covered case for Pixel Buds which can also recharge them when they’re low. Google says that they will last about five hours on a charge & the case can charge them four times. You can control the earbuds with a few different gestures on the right earbud like tapping it to play/pause, swiping forward to increase the volume and back to decrease the volume.

The real magic of the Pixel Buds is its easier access to Google Assistant. With the Google Translate app, Pixel Buds can translate between 40 different languages. You need to hold your finger down to your ear and say like “help me speak French,” and speak a phrase. When you lift your finger, the Translate app will speak and display your translation. Then the person you’re talking to holds a button down on your phone and say their reply, which you will hear in your ear. According to The Verge, it’s not quite in real time, but it’s swift.

Battery, Sensors & Colors

Google Pixel 2 has a non-removable 2700 mAh Li-Ion battery. On the other hand, Google Pixel 2 XL has a non-removable 3520 mAh Li-Ion battery.

Both phone supports HTML5 & comes with fingerprint (rear-mounted), accelerometer, proximity, gyro, compass, and barometer sensor. But they lack of any new type of technology or sensor like the Face ID of iPhone X. To know more about iPhone X, read the iPhone X features.

Google Pixel 2 & Pixel 2 XL comes with 3 colors: Kinda Blue, Just Black, and Clearly White.

Extra Features

The new Pixel phone features a fast and accurate fingerprint sensor. Both the phone support Nano-SIM card but they also have an integrated eSIM. Both the phone comes with high-definition stereo speakers. Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL does not feature a 3.5 mm headphone jack, which means you’ll need to rely on your USB Type-C port for wired headphones.

A similar version of HTC’s Edge Sense has come to the Pixel line called Active Edge. It will allow you to squeeze the sides of the Pixel phone to launch the Google Assistant quickly.
