Nintendo Switch: A Bold New Game System
Nintendo Switch is a modular hybrid game system. It can play its games connected to a TV like a regular game console, or as a tablet-style handheld with its own controls. This has a 6.2-inch screen which can be propped up on its own kickstand with detachable controllers.
The Nintendo Switch is not like other games console that has ever come before it. You can use it as a portable tablet device with a built-in kickstand or sit & play by docking it in a base that connects to your TV. At home, you can plug the tablet into the dock and beam your game-play onto the big screen. In a park, you can plug the two controller sticks in either side of the screen and walk about & play at the same time.
There will be many accessories also, for instance, the Controller Pro for players who find the standard Joy-Con controller too small for their hands. If you’re a Lego or Transformers fan, you’ll be delighted with the design.
In terms of its form, the Switch has several parts. It is mainly a tablet which connects to a docking station. The tablet, which is the centerpiece of the product, has a 6.2-inch HD display.
There are 2 Joy-Con (L) and Joy-Con (R) controllers, a Joy-Con Grip, 2 Joy-Con straps & the Nintendo Switch docking station. The game cards for the Nintendo Switch are inserted on the top left. At the top, you will find the power and volume buttons, while the speakers are at the bottom. On the back, there is a stand which should make using the Switch a bit more comfortable.
The “Nintendo Switch Dock” is where the Switch lives when it’s in your living room. The tablet slides into the dock and then seems to instantly switch into a TV-connected mode. This is a bit like the Nvidia Shield tablet, which had a similar play-on-TV, play-on-the-go idea.
The Nintendo Switch has a flexible idea of controllers: two “Joy-Con” side pieces slide onto the edges of the Switch tablet, adding four buttons and an analog stick on each side, plus shoulder buttons, just like the Wii U GamePad. But when these are slid off, they can become standalone Wii remote-like controllers.
Here you will get a left-hand element that includes an analog stick and direction buttons alongside a ‘minus’ options button, a Capture button for recording gameplay and a top shoulder trigger. The right-hand element has a second analog stick, the X, Y, A and B input buttons, another shoulder button, a ‘Plus’ start button and a Home button for jumping to the main interface.
There will be many accessories also, for instance, the Controller Pro for players who find the standard Joy-Con controller too small for their hands. They can charge while attached to the tablet.
Games it will play
Nintendo’s upcoming ‘Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ will be a launch title on March 3, and it’s just the start. Two other titles available at launch will be ‘Skylanders Imaginators’ and ‘Just Dance 2017’; which is already available on the PS4 and Xbox One. Nintendo says there are over 80 titles in active development. It remains a pleasant classic.
When it is docked, the Switch GPU will be operating at a frequency of 768 MHz. When used as a handheld console, the Switch will be underclocked to the tune of 307.2 MHz.
The four ARM A57 cores of its processor are 1020 MHz. There is 4 GB RAM, 32 GB internal memory and also has an expandable microSD slot.
Nintendo estimates you’ll get between 2.5 and 6.5 hours of battery life at a go.
“The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild can be played for roughly three hours on a single charge,” says the company.
That might not sound like a lot, but you can use a standard USB Type-C phone charger cable to keep it topped up or just slot it into the dock at home.
Nintendo comes with one of its best console for now. And obviously you want to buy it. But Sony PS4 Pro 4K UHD will give you another level of gameplay.
