On 9th January 2007, Steve Jobs first announced the iPhone which is released later that year on June 29. 2017 will marks the 10th anniversary of the iPhone.

Rumor has it that to celebrate the momentous occasion, Apple has been holding back some of its most groundbreaking features for the next iPhone – which many expect to be called the iPhone 8.

Release Date

The iPhone 8 is still under development and will likely to launch in the fall of 2017.  In the months ahead of its launch, we’ll undoubtedly learn more about the specs of the device.

We’ve rounded up all the latest rumors and leaks, so if you’re unimpressed by the iPhone 7’s features, you’ll know what the next iPhone update is likely to be.

Design and Naming

According to the analysts, the iPhone 8 will have a bigger launch than the iPhone 6.

The current iOS subscriber base is 45-50% bigger than it was in 2014. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus received an incredible response from consumers as they were the first Apple smartphones to sport the bigger 4.7” and 5.5” screens.

Following Apple’s standard naming scheme, the next iPhone should be “iPhone S”. But given the major changes Apple plans to introduce in 2017, it seems unlikely the device will receive an “S” name.

So there’s a good chance Apple may decide to skip directly to the next full number, naming the 2017 iPhone the iPhone 8.

Reiterating the idea of three models (an iPhone 7S, an iPhone 7S Plus, and the presumptively named iPhone 8), the analysts believe that all three models will feature ‘fast charge’ circuits, making the smartphone battery more optimized for a day of use in fifteen to twenty minutes.

Also on the cards for the iPhone 8’s power system is the inclusion of wireless charging. Rumor is that Apple is working on long-range wireless charging technology for its iPhone 8.

Long-range wireless charging is superior to the existing wireless charging methods because it does not require devices to be as close to a charging source or mat.

While there is no confirmation from Apple, Forbes’ Amit Chowdhury has turned detective to highlight the evidence that the next flagship iPhone will be using technology from Energous that allows wireless charging at a distance of fifteen feet.

With Apple having eliminated the headphone jack in the 2016 iPhone 7, leaving the Lightning port to serve multiple functions, wireless charging is a logical next step for the 2017 iPhone.

Rumors of a glass body also support wireless charging, as wireless charging functionality works better without an aluminum casing.

It’s very likely that the iPhone 8 will run on iOS 11. As for power, Apple only just moved to a quad-core chip with the iPhone 7 range, so we expect quad-core will come again for the iPhone 8, with the chip likely called the A11 or the A11 Fusion. 3GB or 4GB of RAM is likely to be there, as while the iPhone 7 is stuck with just 2GB of RAM & the iPhone 7 Plus has 3GB.

According to KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has often correctly predicted upcoming Apple products – the analyst predicts the upcoming iPhone could feature a curved 5.8” AMOLED screen.

Based on information sourced from the Asian supply chain, IHS analyst Kevin Wang also believes the 2017 iPhone will include a “dual-curve” OLED display that covers the left and right edges of the device. It is not clear from Wang’s statement how far the display will extend to the edges of the device.

The iPhone 8 could include more advanced biometric features such as facial recognition or iris scanning. Reports out of the Asian supply chain have also suggested Apple is working on an iris scanning feature, but one rumor says the feature won’t be ready until 2018, so there is still some uncertainty as to whether we’ll see iris scanning in 2017.

An enhanced Taptic engine is one of the features that could be included in the 2017 iPhone, according to a report from Japanese site Nikkei. Apple is said to be working on a “high-performance motor” that’s able to “create more complex tactile vibrations.”

More recently, Apple blogger John Gruber made similar claims, saying that “the entire face will be the display. The Touch ID sensor & the front-facing camera will be somehow embedded in the display. The speaker & all the sensors will somehow be behind the display.”
